The highly anticipated “The Exorcist: Confession” has hit theaters, marking the beginning of a new trilogy that aims to continue the legacy of William Friedkin’s unforgettable 1972 horror classic, “The Exorcist.” Following the same formula that propelled the recent “Halloween” trilogy (2018-2022) to success, production studio Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green are back in action.
However, unlike the return of Michael Myers, “The Exorcist: Confession” has not received as much love from both audiences and global critics. This has prompted David Gordon Green to hint that he may not be taking the director’s seat for the two planned sequels to “Confession.” Instead, he may choose to provide guidance on the story’s direction.
DAVID GORDON GREEN HAS NOT BEEN FIRED!
Before jumping to conclusions, it’s essential to provide some context to Green’s statements. There was never a clear commitment from David Gordon Green to direct the entire “The Exorcist” trilogy, although strong implications arose, especially after his success with the “Halloween” reboots. It’s entirely possible that other filmmakers could be considered to helm the remaining “Exorcist” films, but this does not signify Green’s departure.
David Gordon Green does express an eagerness to direct “The Exorcist: Deceiver” (the original title), but as he told the Hollywood Reporter, he is “officially not on board.” The direction of the sequels remains a compelling mystery, especially considering Blumhouse’s significant financial commitment after acquiring the franchise rights for a whopping $400 million. “The Exorcist: Confession,” which earned $45 million worldwide on its opening weekend, is unlikely to cover that entire sum alone.
