“Monsieur Spade” is a series that brings a classic detective story to life while resurrecting a legendary character. Here’s the first teaser trailer, which may be short but already looks highly promising:
The title character of “Monsieur Spade” is Sam Spade, one of the most famous private detectives in American literary history, created by Dashiell Hammett in 1929. Humphrey Bogart immortalized the character on the big screen in John Huston’s masterpiece, “The Maltese Falcon.” Now, “Children Of Men” star Clive Owen is bringing Sam Spade back to life on TV.
The first season of “Monsieur Spade,” consisting of six episodes, is set to premiere on the AMC network (known for “The Walking Dead” and “Breaking Bad”) in the United States in early 2024. Information about when and where viewers in Germany can watch the series has not been released yet.
In addition to Clive Owen, the series features other well-known actors and actresses, including Denis Ménochet from “Inglourious Basterds,” Louise Bourgoin (“The Nun”), Chiara Mastroianni (“The Flea Market of Madame Claire”), Rebecca Root (“The Danish Girl”), Oscar Lesage (“Marie Antoinette”), and Cara Bossom (“Radioactive”).
Filming took place in France, specifically in the Gard department in the Occitanie region, in the southern part of our neighboring country. The direction of all six episodes was helmed by Scott Frank, known for directing “The Queen’s Gambit.” Frank, alongside Tom Fontana (“Oz” and “Homicide”), is also the creator of the series and the author of all the scripts.
For those who may not be familiar with the film-noir classic “The Maltese Falcon” or want to revisit it while eagerly awaiting “Monsieur Spade,” it’s available for home viewing, including as a paid video-on-demand option or as a 4K Blu-ray released in the spring of 2023.
“MONSIEUR SPADE”: HERE’S THE STORY
The year is 1963: The legendary private detective Sam Spade (Clive Owen) has left his home in San Francisco to enjoy his retirement in southern France. He appreciates the climate, the peace, and the tranquility of Bozouls. However, his peaceful days come to an end when six highly beloved nuns in the region are brutally murdered in a local convent. As the community mourns, and the police struggle to find answers, dark secrets surface, and sinister rumors circulate.
Meanwhile, Spade can’t help but start his own investigation. During his inquiries, he discovers that the murders must somehow be connected to a very special child (Cara Bossom) in the area, a child who is believed by the locals to possess supernatural powers.
