“Into The Abyss” delivers a hearty dose of gritty future action, painting a bleak picture of humanity teetering on the brink of extinction. The trailer hints at the struggles of the last survivors in this dire scenario. Does this thriller deserve a spot on your watchlist?
THE POST-APOCALYPTIC VIBE:
Despite the absence of zombies, “Into The Abyss” undeniably conjures thoughts of the hit series “The Walking Dead” with its portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world. And when seemingly invincible aliens, hell-bent on conquering Earth, enter the picture, it’s hard not to draw parallels to Steven Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds.”
The burning question is whether this Argentine contribution to the genre can inject its unique twist into these influences. You’ll soon have the chance to find out from the comfort of your couch because “Into The Abyss” is set to release on Blu-ray and DVD in Germany on October 27, 2023.
THE MIND BEHIND THE CAMERA:
Directed and written by Matias Xavier Rispau (known for “Blanco O Negro”), the same creative mind who served as the chief cinematographer for last year’s delightfully outrageous zombie comedy “PussyCake,” which graced our screens on Blu-ray. Once again, he takes the reins behind the camera. The role of the lone hero in “Into The Abyss” is brought to life by Rispau’s brother, Martín.
THE PLOT OF “INTO THE ABYSS”:
A grim era has descended upon our planet. Why? Aliens have landed on Earth, intent on ravaging it and eradicating all its inhabitants. Bleakness, darkness, and violent storms have become the norm. Bannon (Martín Rispau), residing in a wrecked car, is among the few who have survived the attacks. Clinging desperately to the past, he relies on old voice and text messages on his otherwise useless smartphone.
With the help of a walkie-talkie he stumbled upon in an abandoned building during one of his forays, he manages to communicate with other survivors. But can he trust them? The danger posed by lurking monsters—both alien and human—is ever-present. The world as he knew and loved it has come to an end, and the future is uncertain. The challenge lies in the present, which he must navigate anew every day.
