If you’re a fan of films where the assembly and composition of the gang are as crucial as the heist itself, then “Heist 88” is one to watch. Based on a true story, this thriller delves into one of the most significant bank heists in US history, which unfolded in 1988. It’s a tale that would leave George Clooney’s Danny from “Ocean’s Eleven” or Kevin Spacey’s Doc from “Baby Driver” envious.
The film, exuding an elegant retro look as seen in the trailer, made its North American debut on September 29, 2023, exclusively on the streaming service Paramount+. However, whether and when “Heist 88” will be available in other regions on the same platform remains uncertain.
The mastermind behind this heist is portrayed by Courtney B. Vance, known to many as Prosecutor Ron Carver from over 100 episodes of the “Law & Order” spin-off, “Criminal Intent.” Vance shared the screen with talents like Keesha Sharp (“Power Book II: Ghost”), Hollywood veteran Keith David (“The Thing”), Nican Robinson (“Ahsoka”), Bentley Green (“61st Street”), and Mariah Gordon (“The Chi”). The directorial helm was taken up by TV director Menhaj Huda (“The Flash,” “Charmed”). Vance and his wife Angela Bassett (“Malcolm X”) produced the film, with the screenplay crafted by Dwayne Johnson-Cochran (“Men Of Granite”).
The story is inspired by the criminal exploits of Armand Moore, who hacked the newly installed computer network of the First National Bank of Chicago in 1988, making off with a staggering $80 million. To this day, it remains one of the most significant heists in US criminal history.
“Heist 88”: Here’s the Story
Jeremy Horne (Courtney B. Vance) has a prior fraud conviction in Detroit. However, before reporting to prison to serve his sentence, he travels to Chicago for his recently deceased brother’s funeral. During his visit, he discovers that his nephew, Marshall (Bentley Green), has friends working in the transfer department of a major bank, all of whom are severely underpaid. This revelation sparks an idea in Uncle Jeremy’s mind.
These young individuals are acquainted with various financial executives who frequently call in to make substantial transfers. With access to their passwords, they could initiate transfers from these executives’ accounts to one they set up abroad. All Horne needs to do is orchestrate suitable distractions to ensure no one notices before he and his accomplices vanish.
