Fans of dystopian science fiction worlds, rejoice! A live-action adaptation of “Cyberpunk 2077” is officially in the works. Whether it will be a film or a series, the video game developer CD Projekt Red has yet to reveal.
This confirmation echoes rumors that began circulating even before the game’s release in 2020, suggesting that an adaptation of the game was in the pipeline. “Cyberpunk 2077” draws its inspiration from the pen-and-paper role-playing game “Cyberpunk 2020,” and its creator, Mike Pondsmith, explained back then that Hollywood star Keanu Reeves’ involvement brought enormous attention to the video game, potentially paving the way for a film adaptation.
Could Keanu Reeves Reprise His Role?
It’s a fact that Keanu Reeves graced many game posters as Johnny Silverhand, undoubtedly contributing to the game’s popularity. However, whether this popularity translates into a film or series adaptation, as predicted by Pondsmith, remains uncertain. Moreover, there’s no answer yet to the looming question of whether Reeves will be involved in any capacity in the film or series adaptation.
It’s still far too early to tell. Aside from the ongoing strike by the actors’ union, which currently prevents Reeves from being officially linked to new projects, the adaptation of “Cyberpunk 2077” is still in its infancy. As Variety reports, the only known involvement thus far is the studio Anonymous Content, known for series like “Mr. Robot” and “True Detective” and films like “The Revenant” and “Spotlight.”
In Search of a Screenwriter Currently, they are in search of a screenwriter. The story is said to be “set in the world of ‘Cyberpunk 2077,'” which suggests it may not be a direct adaptation of the game’s plot. This further adds uncertainty to Keanu Reeves’ potential involvement. Worth noting is that Reeves isn’t the only Hollywood star associated with the franchise who could be considered for a role in the adaptation. Idris Elba recently joined the fray in the “Phantom Liberty” expansion.
“Cyberpunk 2077” is set in Night City, a fictional Californian city in a dystopian cyberpunk world populated by cyborgs and ruled by mega-corporations. In this action-packed game, players step into the shoes of the character V, navigating dangerous missions in the dark metropolis.
