The fourth season of the German hit series “Babylon Berlin” is set to premiere on free-to-air television on October 1st. The episodes will be broadcast over several days. However, if you can’t wait and want to binge-watch all the episodes right away, there’s a streaming alternative!
“Babylon Berlin” has been a real success story for ARD and Sky in recent years, establishing German series as a credible brand in the international market even before Netflix hits like “Dark.” The highly anticipated fourth season of this historical drama, featuring the detective duo Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) and Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries), premiered on Sky and WOW over a year ago. Now, for those who aren’t subscribers to these platforms, there’s reason to rejoice. Starting from October 1, 2023, the new episodes will finally be available on free-to-air TV and are already accessible on the ARD Mediathek.
For those looking forward to a classic TV event, you can watch the twelve episodes of the new season over the course of four consecutive days until October 4th on “Das Erste” (ARD’s flagship television channel). On Sunday and Monday, there will be four episodes each starting at 8:15 PM. On Tuesday, two episodes will be shown starting at around 10:10 PM, and the final two episodes will air on Wednesday starting at approximately 9:45 PM.
However, if you can’t wait and want to binge-watch all the episodes over the weekend, you can already stream the entire fourth season for free in the ARD Mediathek, with no subscription required and as many viewings as you like.
What’s in Store for Season 4 of “Babylon Berlin” In the fourth season, the seasoned director and writing team of Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries, and Henk Handloegten transport us to Berlin in the 1930s. Here, not only has the economic crisis left its mark, but the city is slowly but surely being overrun by the rise of right-wing politics.
Caught in the middle is Detective Gereon Rath, who finds himself torn between conflicting forces, putting not only his relationship with colleague Charlotte Ritter at risk but also his own conscience. Meanwhile, Charlotte grapples with her relationship with her sister Toni (Irene Böhm), which leads her deep into the circles of homelessness on the streets of Berlin.
The season showcases some familiar and opulent settings like Moka Efti and the police precinct at the Red Castle but also introduces new and impressive locations such as the Jewish Scheunenviertel and the boxing milieu of Berlin’s underworld, complete with its eccentric characters.
New Places and Faces in Season 4 Among the newcomers is the Jewish-American gangster Goldstein (Mark Ivanir), who is central to Volker Kutscher’s novel, the basis for the fourth season of “Babylon Berlin.” Goldstein has unfinished business in Berlin and crosses paths with the increasingly unhinged millionaire Alfred Nyssen (Lars Eidinger) and his wife Helga (Hannah Herzsprung), whom viewers may remember from previous seasons.
Despite the shock of the recent news that Sky is canceling all German productions, at least the production of the fifth season of “Babylon Berlin” is said to be unaffected and will be solely undertaken by ARD. So, the story continues…
